Ploiesti Come Close But Khimik Advance

Khimik kept their nerve from the free-throw line to progress to the EuroChallenge Regular Season as CSU Asesoft Ploiesti won 91 -86 on the night but fell agonisingly short by two points on aggregate.

In the early exchanges there was nothing between with only a score by the prolific Catalin Burlacu giving Ploiesti a two point advantage at 27-25 by the end of the first.

In the second quarter, the game continued to be close although when Doneal Mack sunk his two from the line the lead had grown to six points for the hosts, leaving Khimik only a point ahead on aggregate.

Khimik answered the question posed quickly with Kalnichenko levelling the game at 38 all with a three-pointer. The teams could not be separated at half-time and went into the locker-room with the score tied at 44-44.

Burlacu was ready for the second half of the game and sunk two from the line to spark a 6-0 run for the home team only to see the lead wiped out in the next two minutes as the scores became tied again at 50-50.

Ending the quarter with an impressive 17-11 run, the home team trailed Khimik by only a single point on aggregate going into the last ten minutes.

Curtis Millage then got busy early in the final quarter for the visitors as the tide turned once again as they went in front by a single point only to give the cue to Burlacu to inspire the home team once more.

Defensively the home team gave it their all and Khimik did not score from open play at all in the last five minutes - but crucially, scored their last 11 points from the free-throw line and that was enough to see them through.

Burlacu was the top performer for the home team with a classy 34 points and 7 rebounds, while Mileage poured in 22 points for Khimik.
