|Belgium U20 international Quentin Serron came up with a buzzer-beater in a dramatic finale at Gent to extend BC Oostende's winning streak |
Quentin Serron rescued BC Oostende with a buzzer-beating basket at Optima Gent at the weekend to keep the EuroChallenge Final Four hosts on a winning roll.
Oostende were in danger of being blown out after being outscored 25-11 in the first quarter.
They went to half-time trailing 43-31 but emerged from the changing rooms with more fight and battled back to take the lead in the fourth quarter.
Still, Gent went back in front late in the fourth quarter.
Marcus Faison, who had missed two free-throws with Oostende trailing 70-66, hit a three-ball to close the gap to one and after Veselin Petrovic intercepted a Gent pass, Faison ended up feeling Serron who scored just before the death.
Serron, a former standout with Belgium at the U20 European Championship who is contending for a place in his country's EuroBasket squad, said: "It would have been extremely frustrating for the previous week to win at champions Charleroi and then immediately lose at Gent.
"We again started badly and our defense was not aggressive enough and Gent took advantage and shot about 70% in the first quarter.
"Gent put the knife to our throat but we continued to believe in it.
"(Lionel) Bosco defended me very briefly but the ball fell in just before the buzzer.
"The important thing is that we won."
Oostende, who will take on Krka Novo Mesto at the Final Four, got 21 points from Matt Lojeski at Gent.
They are now fifth in the standings at 14-11.
