VEF Riga came from behind to win the second leg of their Eurocup Qualifying Round tie at Panellinios but the margin of victory wasn't enough for the Latvian side to advance in the competition.
Valdis Valters' team won the contest 79-74, but Panellinios' 94-79 first-leg triumph gave the Greek outfit a 10-point triumph on aggregate and allowed them to reach the Eurocup regular season.
VEF Riga began well, opening a 6-2 advantage to trim the overall deficit to 11, only for the home side to pour in nine straight points.
Britton Johnsen scored seven points in that run for the Greeks.
The visitors reduced the arrears to 21-20 and that's when the home team surged ahead again with a Johnsen lay-up capping an 8-0 spurt that left Panellinios on top, 29-20.
Elias Zouros' men kept their noses in front and went to half-time leading 48-39 for a 24-point advantage on aggregate.
They stayed on top in the contest until 4:30 remained.
That's when Gregory Renfro drove into the lane and scored for a 71-70 VEF Riga lead.
A three-ball by Renfroe extended the VEF Riga advantage to 76-72 with 2:19 to play, only for Joshua Davis to settle the home team's nerves with a pair of free-throws.
VEF Riga managed to go on top by five in the game, but that wasn't enough as Panellinios won over the two legs.
Johnsen had 22 points for Panellinios while VEF Riga's Renfroe and Ingus Bankevics each had 23.
ILIAS ZOUROS - HEAD COACH PANELLINIOS B.C
"From the current game we only keep the qualification. It is very important for the team to qualify for 3rd consecutive year in the groups of Eurocup. Still we are not ready and want a lot of work. We are not in the correct street and defensively are villains. Pleasant is that Papamakarios took more time of attendance and Kalaitzis came back after his injury. Unpleasant is that Johnsen was injured and very probably will be absent for roughly one month, with result the problems are multiplied."
MANOLIS PAPAMAKARIOS - GUARD OF PANELLINIOS B.C
"We are thankful that we qualified for Eurocup three years in a row. We are not however pleased with today's game. The team has a lot of possibilities and I hope in the end of season we achieve our objectives."
GREGORY RENFROE - GUARD OF VEF RIGA
"Our objective was to win and make up the difference of 15 points. We did not begin well but when afterwards we improved, there was not enough time left. We are satisfied with the victory."
VALDIS VALTERS - HEAD COACH OF VEF RIGA
"I want to give congratulations to Panellinios B.C for the qualification and to wish them good luck for the remainder of the contest. We have young players and games like these are hard tests. We won because we improved on defence and we are cheerful for the victory."
