Gregory Renfroe erupted for 29 points to help fire VEF Riga to an 87-81 victory at Okapi Aalstar. Renfroe also had seven assists and nine rebounds on Tuesday as the Latvian club won for the second time in EuroChallenge Group F. Both sides were already eliminated from contention for a place in the Last 16 but there was much to play for, especially for Okapi who had yet to win in the competition. The Belgians trailed 32-18 but continued to battle and eventually claimed a 36-35 lead late in the second quarter following a basket by Jamar Wilson. A pair of Renfroe jumpers gave VEF the advantage, only for Wilson to get fouled while shooting from behind the arc at the half-time buzzer. He made all three shots from the line to knot the contest at 39-39. The lead changed hands repeatedly in the third quarter before a Renfroe lay-up tied it at 61-61 with 10 minutes remaining. VEF scored nine unanswered points at the start of the fourth quarter and stayed in front the rest of the way. Okapi slumped to their fifth defeat in as many games but will have one more chance at victory when they take on Banvit in Turkey next week. |
