Michalis Kounounis didn't play much in the first two games for Proteas EKA AEL but he got an extended run on Tuesday night against Elan Chalon and made the most of it.
The 28-year-old point guard hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 1:11 remaining and Proteas ended up prevailing, 72-69.
Kounounis finished with 11 points in 21 minutes.
He was two of three from behind the arc.
Ilian Evtimov led the Cypriot club with 20 points and six rebounds.
He hit four of seven shots from long range.
Chalon must have thought they had grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck in the fourth quarter after turning a 63-62 deficit into a 69-63 lead with Maxime Zianveni making the last two baskets in the spurt.
Proteas hit back.
An Evtimov three closed the gap to 69-67 and then Kounounis struck with his shot from behind the arc for a 70-69 lead.
Drew Neitzel and Stéphane Risacher each missed jump shots before Evtimov sank two free-throws for the final points of the game.
Chalon lost despite out-rebounding the home side, 37-27.
Both sides are now 2-1 in Group D.
