Chris Oliver poured in 22 points and corralled 11 rebounds to lead Germans MEG Göttingen to a season-opening 88-76 victory at Lokomotiv Kuban in EuroChallenge Group A. Playing in a European competition for the first time, Göttingen rode the momentum of their first road win of the season in their domestic league at Mitteldeutscher BC over the weekend to an historic triumph in Russia. John Patrick's Violets seized the initiative in the first quarter. Trailing 10-4, the visitors reeled off 17 unanswered points. Taylor Rochestie had seven points while Christopher McNaughton and Dwayne Anderson poured in four apiece in the run. By half-time, the lead had ballooned to 50-28 with Oliver's 17 points leading the way for Göttingen. After going in front by as many as 24 points in the third quarter, Göttingen allowed Lokomotiv Kuban to get as close as 81-70. The German outfit held on, though, for a decisive victory. Aleksandar Capin had 19 points to lead Lokomotiv Kuban in defeat. Göttingen won the rebounding battle 38-27 and also came up with 13 steals to the home side's nine. Ben Jacobson and Oliver each had three steals for the winners. |
