GAME REPORT

Galatasaray Edge EWE Baskets In Thriller

EWE Baskets Oldenburg experienced the thrill of a buzzer-beating victory last week at Virtus Bologna but on Tuesday the German outfit suffered the agony of a narrow home defeat to Galatasaray.

Turkish veteran center Hüseyin Besok poured in 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Galatasaray claimed a 93-85 triumph in Oldenburg - their first in the EuroChallenge Top 16.

Both clubs are now 1-2 in Group J.

Former Serbia captain Milan Gurovic contributed 23 in the triumph.

In an extremely tight game from start to finish, EWE Baskets' Jason Gardner made two free throws to knot the contest at 83-83 with 3:25 to go.

The pivotal sequence followed with Galatasaray going back in front with a Gurovic lay-up.

After last week's hero for EWE Baskets Je'Kel Foster missed down low, his teammate Rickey Paulding was called for an unsportsmanlike foul on Rashid Atkins.

Atkins made both free throws, and Galatasaray kept possession.

Atkins then scored again to make it 89-83 with 2:29 to go.

A Gardner lay-up coming out of a timeout reduced the arrears to four points and each side then failed to score on its next two possessions.

On the Oldenburg club's second failed attempt, Antonio Graves blocked a lay-up by Gardner but EWE Baskets grabbed the offensive rebound and called a timeout, still trailing by four.

When play resumed, Gurovic intercepted a pass by Oldenburg's Rickey Paulding's and was then fouled.

He made both shots at the charity stripe to seal the win.

Milan Majstorovic led a balanced EWE Baskets attack with 19 points.

There were 2,712 spectators who turned out to watch the game.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes EWE Baskets vs. Galatasaray Cafe Crown

Koray Mincinözlü, coach Galatasaray Cafe Crown:
"I think my team played a good game. I'm especially pleased that our point guard Rashid Atkins is healthy again. He makes the whole team better."

Predrag Krunic, coach EWE Baskets:
"We played a good team tonight. We gave up too many easy baskets in the first half. We wanted to slow down Galatasaray. That did now work in the first half and in the last two minutes. I'm not happy with the way my team defended. But we had a realistic chance to win the game. That's all you can ask for."

Polat Kocaoglu, Galatasaray Cafe Crown:
"Our defense in the last two minutes won the game for us tonight. Oldenburg is a great offensive team and they showed that tonight. We did not defend well for 38 minutes but we held our own defensively, when it really counted."

Miladin Pekovic, EWE Baskets:
"We played against a strong team tonight. Our defense was sloppy for the most part of the game, we can't be happy with that. Now we have to focus on the next game against Bremerhaven."
