Panionios Sqeak Past Rostov

09.01.2007

Panionios emerged from a tense finish to begin their Group K campaign with a 62-60 win at Lokomotiv Rostov.

Damir Miljkovic sank two free throws with three seconds left to put the game out of Lokomotiv's reach at 62-57 and render Omar Sneed's last gasp three-pointer meaningless.

The hosts had led for much of the game, but the margin was never more than a handful of points.

Lokomotiv finished a low-scoring first quarter 13-9 up, and had a two point advantage, 28-26, at the half.

However, Panionios then came at them in the third quarter, and the lead changed hands twice before Nikolaos Angelopoulos's jump shot with  12:45 left in the game put the visitors ahead for good.

They could not pull clear though, and going into the final minute Sergey Toporov split a pair of free-throws with 48 seconds left to cut the lead to three, 60-57.

After a time out, Toporov intercepted a bad pass and Lokomotiv got three chances to tie it.

Maurice Bailey missed but grabbed his own rebound to set up Toporov.

He too missed but Sneed got the rebound and found Valentin Kubrakov, who missed from three-point range, allowing Miljkovic to grab the rebound and ice the game after a foul from Sneed.

Miljkovic finished with 16 points for Panionios.

Toporov had 19 points for the hosts, while Kresimir Loncar grabbed eight rebounds.
