Girona Notch Fourth Win

Spain ace Marc Gasol recorded a double-double as Akasvayu Girona swept aside Maccabi Rishon Le Zion 99-82 to book their place in the next round of the EuroCup.

Gasol, who helped Spain to gold at this summer's FIBA World Championship, scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Akasvayu recorded their fourth successive win in Group D.

"I'm very happy with how the whole team played," Gasol said.

"We've now qualified from the group and we've played with a lot of intensity. The whole team continues to grow and now we're getting back all of our players."

Akasvayu's quest to make it through the group stages was put on hold last week when their match at BC Siauliai was postponed due to adverse weather conditions in Vilnius.

However, the Spanish side made no mistake on Wednesday, outclassing Maccabi to continue their perfect record and take over at the top of the group.

There was little to separate the two sides in the opening 15 minutes, with Akasvayu holding a narrow 21-19 lead at the end of the first period, and a 38-34 advantage midway through the second quarter.

But a three-pointer from Fernando San Emeterio started a 19-6 run that put Akasvayu 57-40 ahead, and Maccabi found it impossible to get back into the  game after that.

San Emeterio provided good support to Gasol with 16 points, four rebounds and three assists, while German Gabriel (13 points), Dalibor Bagaric (12) and Ariel McDonald (11) all scored in double figures in a fine team performance form Akasvayu.

Maccabi also shared the points around with five players making double-digits.

Reggie Moore was the stand-out player for the Israeli side, scoring a match-high 19 points as well as pulling down 10 rebounds.

Despite the defeat, Maccabi (2-3) are now level on seven points with BCM Gravelines (2-3), and two ahead of Siauliai (1-3), who have their re-arranged game against Akasvayu still in hand.

"This was another important match in terms of taking first place," said Akasvayu coach Sveltislav Pesic.

"We're happy to have won without any injuries, and above all I'm very happy with the performance of our young players such as Gasol and San Emeterio".

"We have a lot of respect for Girona, they're one of the best in the competition," added Maccabi Rishon coach Gilad Katz.

"We played aggressively but when you concede 99 points it's hard to win. I hope we win the next one."
