Girona Ease To Win
// 22 November 2006

Akasvayu Girona moved clear at the top of Group D after inflicting a first defeat of the tournament on BCM Gravelines.

The two rivals were both boasting 100% records after the first two rounds of EuroCup fixtures, but it was Akasvayu who kept their run going on Wednesday night after trashing the French side 93-65.

With Marc Gasol and Fernando San Emeterio both taking the game to Gravelines early on, Akasvayu were quickly in control of proceedings and built a 26-15 lead by the end of the first period.

Center Gasol scored eight of his 10 points in the first period, while forward San Emeterio also contributed eight points in the opening 10 minutes, before adding just three more in the remainder of the match.

The second quarter was much more even, but Akasvayu were still able to extend their lead to 18 points at 46-28.

Gravelines, thanks largely to Rahshon Turner and Rickey Paulding Jr, battled to keep in touch with their hosts during the third period and even managed to reduce Akasvayu's lead by one point heading into the final quarter.

However, Akasvayu never surrendered their early advantage and, after dominating the final 10 minutes, were able to claim a convincing 28 point win.

With Akasvayu coach Svetislav Pesic regularly rotating his team, the Spanish side's points were shared around.

Six players scored in double-figures in the victory, with Darryl Middleton leading the way with 16 points in just 19 minutes of action.

In contrast, more than half of Gravelines' total was recorded by just two players, with Turner leading all scorers with 18 points, and Paulding Jr adding 17 points.

Middleton was pleased with the win, but admits the job is only half done for his side.

“It was important to get the third victory in the competition to consolidate first place in the group,” he said.

“We still have work to do to get into the second round as we'll be away from home for two of our last three matches.”

Pesic felt his side showed good mental toughness against a Gravelines side that had beaten Maccabi Rishon Le Zion and BC Siauliai in their opening two matches.

“It was important to concentrate to get the result. We got the result by controlling the match throughout, by controlling the defense and by maintaining our concentration,” he said.

Meanwhile, Paulding Jr admits the better side won.

“Girona are a great team with excellent players, and they caused us problems with their defense and were simply the better team.

Gravelines coach Frederic Sarre added: “Girona play a fast game with an aggressive defense, and we had no patience to break them down. We have to keep working to improve for the future.”
