BC Kalev Thrash PAOK For First Victory

The Group E contest between BC Kalev of Estonia and PAOK Thessaloniki would not offer the winner a reward of a place in the next phase of the EuroCup with both sides already eliminated.

But do not tell the Kalev players or the 4,200 fans who showed up to watch that nothing was at stake as they claimed their first victory in the competition, a 127-76 mauling of their visitors from Greece in Tallinn.

Gert Dorbek had 23 points and Veljo Vranes 22 as Kalev stormed to the triumph.

Kalev jumped out to a 32-19 first-quarter lead and never looked back.

By half-time, the lead had ballooned to 62-35.

Kalev outrebounded PAOK 38-28, while also shooting an eye-popping 40 of 52 (76.9%) from the floor inside the arc.

Just seven players saw action for PAOK, who will now turn their attention to Greece and attempt to safeguard their status in the top flight.

Despite his side's failure to qualify to Round II, Kalev coach Aivar Kuusmaa was satisfied with his team's performance.

"Overall I'm happy with our Eurocup season. We accomplished what we predicted and saved us a spot for the next season. This win hopefully gives a lot of confidence for our players," he said.
