Dutch side Demon Astronauts Amsterdam had a rough welcome to the FIBA Europe League play-offs Tuesday night courtesy of Strauss Iscar Nahariya.
Nahariya, who reached the quarter-final play-offs in last season's FIBA Europe League, cruised to an easy victory at home and were never threatened by the Dutch visitors.
Amsterdam tied the scores at 4-4 in the 4th minute, but trailed for the remaining 36 minutes.
Nahariya stretched away in the first quarter thanks to an inspired opening 10 minutes from Erez Markovich and Barak Peleg. The Nahariya frontcourt duo combined for 19 first quarter points and the home team led 32-21 by the end of the period.
Other than a brief fourth quarter resurgence by Amsterdam, Nahariya had little problem in maintaining the lead. Amsterdam got as close as 1 point in the fourth (63-62) after a lay-up from Joseph Spinks, but a 3-pointer from Peleg sparked a 12-2 run and Nahariya cruised home to victory.
Beleg had 17 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists for Nahariya. Markovich added 15 points and Amit Ben David contributed 12 points and 8 assists.
