GAME REPORT

UNICS Kazan 109 vs. Galil Elyon 59

UNICS kept its hopes alive of repeating last season's triumph in the FIBA Europe League with a convincing 109-59 win over Hapoel Galil-Elyon from Israel.

For UNICS coach Stanislav Eremine it was the first game in the season with which he was fully satisfied as his team played the whole 40 minutes the way he had planned.

Oded Kattash, head coach of Galil Elyon, had to admit that UNICS deserved this win as they were better in all aspects of the game.

The guests were only leading during the first 3 minutes of the game (6-7).

UNICS used a 8-0 run and later on 4 unanswered points by Kaspars Kambala to reach a double-digit lead for the first time after 6:30 minutes - 18-8, at the end of the first quarter it was already 25-12.

With 6 minutes left in the second quarter Galil Elyon's 19-year old forward Lior Eliyahu hit a jumper to reduce UNICS' lead to 12, but this would later turn out to be the last points scored by the Israeli team in the first half.

During the same time the Russians scored 14 more points to make it 44-18 at halftime.

Basically the game was already decided.

In the third quarter the picture didn't change: UNICS scored the first 6 points, extending their lead to a 44-point lead at the end of the quarter, 80-36, and finally to an impressive 109-59 win.

The main reason for UNICS completely controlling the whole game was their superb defence (Galil Elyon was held to 35% from the field) and the fact that they were controlling the boards on both ends of the floor (rebounds: 52-31).

Shammond Williams had an impressive game for the Russians, posting a double-double with 28 points and 10 assists. Chris Anstey had 17 points and 8 rebounds in just 19 minutes while Paul Shirley added 14 points and 9 rebounds in his first FEL game for Kazan.

Puerto Rican guard Christian Dalmau Santana had a season-high 22 points for Galil Elyon.
