Peristeri visited Wloclawek with the knowlegde that they had no chance to qualify for the play-offs and most of their main players were unavailable due to injury. Nonetheless, the Greek side did not make life easy for Wloclawek, and remained competitive for the entire game.
Peristeri dominated the opening quarter and remained ahead until midway through the second. A 3-pointer from Anwil guard Janis Blums gave the home side their first lead and they gradually edged ahead, finishing the half 41:33.
Peristeri refused to simply submit and eleven 3rd quarter points from Dimintrios Makris (including 3 three-pointers) brought the Greeks right back into the game.
Momentum was in favour of Peristeri, but Wloclawek remained composed in the last quarter, controlling their small advantage and finishing 5 points ahead, 80:75.
The best player in Anwil was Donatas Zavackas, who scored 21 points, had 10 rebounds, 3 steals and an assist. In the opposite team Makris scored 22 points (6/11 three-pointers) and 8 rebounds.
Dimitrios Koustenis, Head Coach, Peristeri Athens:
“Coming here to Wloclawek, we knew we had many problems. Many players had to stay in Athens because of injuries and the flu. We knew we had no chance to proceed to the next round and we came here with eight players. We wanted to honour this competition and we tried to do our best and we were competitive until the end. It was an open game with many outside shots. Anwil was more accurate from the field, made better decisions and as a result won this game.”
Andriej Urlep, Head Coach, Anwil Wloclawek:
“It was a hard game because it was difficult to prepare to the team that came in eight, bench players. Another problem was with motivation. I wanted to give chance to players that don’t get it during the games with a serious opponent. But unfortunatley some of my players didn’t take advantage of it.”
Dimitrios Makris, Peristeri Athens:
“It was the game without any purpose. We knew we had no chance to qualify but we did our best and played as a team. I wanted to wish all the best to Anwil for the next round”.
Donatas Zavackas, Anwil Wloclawek:
“The opponent didn’t take the best players so we relaxed today. We knew we were first no matter what the result would be. It was a tough game then and we had to play hard. It doesn’t matter whether we won with 5-6 points, we won and that’s the most important.
