If there's been a chink in the armor of Ricky Rubio the past couple of seasons, it has been his outside shooting. The 19-year-old is allaying concerns about that aspect of his game, however, with a lot of practice. On Saturday, Rubio, the three-time FIBA Europe Young Player of the Year, hit all five of his shots from long range and finished with a team-high 17 points as Regal Barcelona won 86-79 at Caja Laboral. "Now the shots are going in," he said, "but I've always been improving on shooting and now I feel comfortable just taking the shots. "I'm working before training by taking some shots and I will continue until they go in." Barcelona's most prolific three-pointer shooter, Juan Carlos Navarro - aka ‘La Bomba' - was just one of seven from behind the arc in the game. Barca improved to 24-2 to remain three games clear of Real Madrid and to drop Caja Laboral four games behind. "It was a very complicated game because especially on that court, few visiting teams get a win," Rubio said. "We played a very serious game and in the end we took the victory. "Our defense was very good and that helped us as offense was more fluid. We were able to get easy shots." Now Rubio and another rising star in the ACB, Croatia's Ante Tomic of Real Madrid, are going to take center stage when their clubs meet in the Euroleague Quarter-Finals this week. Barcelona have gotten the better of their fierce rivals this season, beginning with an 86-82 victory in the Spanish Supercopa on October 3 - just two weeks after Rubio and Spain won the EuroBasket gold medal. Rubio then had 18 points in their December 27 ACB clash, a 79-57 Barca romp in the Spanish capital. He buried three of four shots from behind the arc in that game. In the Copa del Rey Final on February 21, Rubio had 13 points as Barcelona routed Madrid, 80-61. Looking ahead to the Euroleague tie, Rubio said: "What's happened in the past belongs to the past and this is a new chapter for us. "We haven't faced Real Madrid in the Euroleague and we know that we have to give everything from day one because we have home-court advantage but if we get distracted, we could lose that. "In the first game, we have to give 100% in order to win." Tomic, meanwhile, is settling in well at Madrid following his move from KK Zagreb. He had a team-high 19 points on Saturday as his club edged Gran Canaria 2014, 74-73. |
