Germany Score Russian Scalp
In the first game of the day in Group F Germany overcame Russia 83-77.
Robin Benzing scored well for Germany, totalling 23 points while hitting all four of his two point field goals in the first quarter to allow his team to take an early lead.
Three other players scored double figures for Germany, Tibor Pleiß leading the way with a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Russia’s best scorer Semen Shashkov, with 27 points and 13 boards, kept Russia close at the end of the first quarter with a shot from his own backcourt which beat the buzzer to take the scores to 23-20 in the Germans’ favour.
Germany controlled the inside game well, forcing Russia to shoot unsuccessfully from distance on several plays meaning the German side could pull away to a ten point, 40-30 lead at half-time.
Things got lively in the second half, as right from the off Semen Antonov got in the face of Maurice Stuckey after the former downed a powerful dunk.
Then with 7:19 remaining in the thrid Antonov got physical again, putting big man Benzing on the floor as he ran to the rim and giving the German two free shots.
In the fourth as the Germans pulled away the Russians kept up their fighting physical style, little Viacheslav Zaytsev went flying over the top of two defenders as he dunked the ball home with 5:27.
It was all to be in vain however, as despite a slight comeback from the Russians, Germany held on for their first win of this stage of the tournament.
