This comeback with the National Team for José, who missed EuroBasket 2009 and the 2010 FIBA World Championship is good news for him and for Spain. The past two seasons have not been all about fun and joy for the former star of Vitoria. He has been bothered by injuries and a struggling Toronto Raptors side, and lost some of his confidence. However, the experienced Calderon remains one of the smartest playmakers around, a true team player, a leader on the court, and is never shy taking big shots when they present themselves. Calderon has that knack for picking up the adequate tempo, which is rather important for a Spanish squad which loves to run and push up the pace, but which has tons of weapons for the half-court offense as well.
