Big Third Quarter Seals It For Italy

Matteo Imbrò (Italy)
Italy point guard Matteo Imbrò led all scorers with 17 points

By Jared Grellet

A big third quarter has propelled Italy past Greece, 71-66, and into the Second Round of the Samsung U18 European Championship.

With the game hanging in the balance at half-time, Amedeo Tessitori swung the outcome in favour of the Italians in the third quarter, dominating inside the paint to amass eight points in the frame and give his team a comfortable 15-point buffer heading into the final period.

Greece's hopes were not assisted when Alexandros Mitsialos, who was leading his team's scoring at that point, suffered a nasty fall midway through the third quarter to bring an end to his night.

Greece hinted at producing a late miracle when Georgios Angelou sunk a jumper with 11 seconds remaining to bring the Greeks within three points.

But Mirco Turel replied with a fast-break lay-up at the other end of the court to wrap up the win for Italy.

Matteo Imbro top-scored for Italy with 17 points whilst Tessitori chipped in with 16 and Turel added 13.

Greece's biggest contribution came from Eleftherios Bochoridis, with 14 points.

Greece now enter their final Group B game on Saturday against Denmark needing to win to have any chance of advancing to the Second Round.

n the group's other game Italy face a showdown with hosts Lithuania.
