Israel Upset Serbia
Israel bounced back from a tough defeat against Italy to upset Serbia 65-61 at the U18 European Championship Men in Pyrgos.
Yotam Shiran led the way for Israel with 14 points while Ben Reis had 12 and Tamir Ariely scored 10 as Dan Franko's team improved to 2-3 in the Qualifying Round Group E.
But the Israelis did not get a big enough win to remain alive for a spot in the 5th-8th place Semi-Final Round.
Despite the loss, Serbia actually qualified for the 5th-8th place games which can eventually lead to a spot in the U19 FIBA World Championship.
Aleksandar Vlahovic hit for 15 points for Miroslav Nikolic's Serbian side and Filip Sepa added 11.
The Israelis started the game in fine fashion. Trailing 9-8, Franko's men went on a 14-3 run to open a 22-12 advantage with two minutes left in the first.
Vlahovic knocked down a triple to bring Serbia within 25-18 after one period. Nikolic's team played some tough defense and Dejan Musli scored three straight baskets, but Israel still led 35-30 at intermission.
Ariely pushed the margin back to 38-33 but Vlahovic hit back-to-back baskets and Bojan Subotic gave Serbia back the lead 39-38. Reis later would knock down a three-ball to help Israel go into the fourth ahead 51-49.
Serbia pulled ahead 56-55 on a three-pointer by reserve Svetozar Stamenkovic. Shiran helped Israel answer for a 61-56 gap. Stamenkovic hit another three-ball and another basket to knot the game at 61-61.
Ron Sabag made it 63-61 and then Vlahovic missed a three-ball with 10 seconds left. Reis knocked down two foul shots with nine seconds to play to decide the game.
