Spain Claims Sixth Consecutive Win

In a tune-up for their semi-final match-up on Wednesday, Spain easily defeated Bulgaria 89-49 in the teams’ last quarter-final round games in Amaliada, Greece.

Six players tallied double-digit scoring and Bulgaria’s Chavdar Kostov was held to 13 points as the Spanish notched their sixth consecutive win at the UMCOR U18 European Championship Men.

Spain's defense held Chavdar Kostov to 13 points.
A first half 11-0 run gave Spain a 32-15 lead and from that point on there would be little doubt as to the game’s outcome.

Spain outscored Bulgaria 50-24 in the second half and coach Luis Guil rested many of his top players in the game’s final minutes.

Xavier Rabaseda came off the bench to lead the Spanish in scoring with 14 points. Pere Tomas added 12, Juan Cabot 11, and Richard Nguema, Javier Vega Mereyo and Antonio Pantin Peleteiro contributed 10 each.

Spain’s defense was key to their win.

They forced 25 Bulgaria turnovers and held Kostov, the competition’s top scorer, to 4-of-19 shooting from the field.

Without a top performance from their star player, Bulgaria would have little hope against a Spanish team that is one of two undefeated teams in the competition (Lithuania is currently undefeated).

Bulgaria, after winning two of three in the preliminary round, lost all three of their quarter-final round games.
