Tuborg Pilsner 84 Fenerbahce SK 67

28 February 2004

Tuborg Pilsner put on a clinical display against fellow Turkish team Fenerbahce Istanbul to advance to the final of the FIBA Europe Conference South Final Four.

The 2 teams had already met once this season in the Turkish League with Tuborg taking the honours. The Izmir based team is currently 4th in the league, and along with German side Mitteldeutscher, is the only undefeated team in the FIBA Europe Cup.

The first quarter of the game was competitive as both sides felt their way into the contest. A 3-pointer from Baris Ozcan with 25 seconds to go gave Tuborg a 21:19 lead at the break.

With momentum on their side, Tuborg started the second quarter quickly and soon opened up a 5-point lead through baskets from their American players Alex Jensen and Glen Whisby. Other than Fenerbache’s Umut Yenice, who scored 6 points, the Istanbul side struggled and Tuborg were able to increase the advantage. A 6:0 run at the end of the quarter and the home side led 47:35 at halftime.

Fenerbahce came out of the blocks quickly after halftime and point guard Jones hit a lay-up and assisted on an alley-oop to Rasim Basak to cut the score. However, Tuborg answered with clinical efficiency. Asim Pars, Tuborg’s national team centre took over the game, scoring 7 points in a row and helping his team to reestablish their lead.

Tuborg’s domination on the boards began to tell and the lead ballooned to 20 points. Tuborg outrebounded their opponents 46-24 with Whisby pulling down 18 and Jensen 15.

Tuborg took a 19-point lead into the 4th quarter and were never threatened for the remainder of the game.

Whisby finished with a game hight 20 points while Pars added 16.

Yenice had 14 for Fenerbache.
