Rock Tartu benefited from an incredible strong first quarter to beat BC Neptunas in their home game 83-69.
It took almost 3 minutes until Augenijus Vaskys scored the first basket of the game. But then it seemed like Rock players could do what they want to do. They made almost every attempt and on defense-side they where able to hold Neptunas totally down. After 10 minutes Rock had a reassuring 29-5 lead.
Neptunas had learned from their mistakes in the first quarter started the second period with full-court press, managing that Rock was unable to score in the first three and a half minutes in the second quarter. Petras Salvis sunk one three-pointer after the other, cutting his team’s deficit to 12 points (43-31).
The third quarter was much more balanced. Neptunas was able to close the gap to five points but thanks to Marek Doronin Rock could regain control of the game, increasing their lead to nine points again (65-56).
Both teams played very nervously in the last ten minutes. And at the end Rock was a little bit luckier. Although Petras Salvis and Martynas Mažeika did a good job for Neptunas, their opponents from ROCK, mostly Tarmo Kikerpill and Vaskys replied efficiently – obvious more efficiently. The 83:69-victory marked the second win for Tartu Rock in this year’s FIBA Europe Cup.
Game-MVP: Augenijus Vaskys
Grigorijus Pancerovas, Head Coach, BC Neptunas:
"We played really bad on the first quarter and later it was very difficult to catch Rock. Our players got exhausted."
Tõnu Lust, Head Coach, Rock Tartu:
"I analyzed our yesterday's game in Estonian league that we lost and made the right decisions for today. Our men were much bolder today, but I am still not satisfied with our game. We have to play much better."
