With outstanding team play and a great effort over 40 minutes, TSK Würzburg won it’s first game in FIBA Europe Cup tonight against BVV Brno, 98:72 (54:36). In front of a home crowd of 600, Wuerzburg took control early and never looked back.
After Dubravko Zemljic put the home team in front, 14:5 with a three pointer after 4:30 minutes in the first quarter, Brno Head Coach Miroslav Pospisil was forced to take his first time out.
“Without defense, you can’t win basketball games”, Pospisil commented after the game.
“The players must play with heart. We played without any defense in the first quarter.”
Even after the timeout, things didn’t improve for the team from the Czech Republic, as Würzburg took a 34:14 lead into the break after the first ten minutes.
After that, Brno found a way to compete, but couldn’t close the gap. At halftime, Wuerzburg still had a comfortable lead, 54:36.
“I’m glad my team played with consistency and a very good effort tonight against a strong opponent. Our defense was excellent, especially in the first half. Also we had only four turnovers in the first 20 minutes. That’s when we won the game”, said Würzburg Head Coach Aaron McCarthy .
The strong play of the home team, who hit 8 of their 15 three pointers (53 %) in the game, continued in the third quarter, when Würzburg put their opponents away by taking a 27-point lead after 30 minutes.
Point Guard Igor Perovic hit one of his six three point shots to make it 79:52.
McCarthy: “Igor was outstanding tonight. I’m also very pleased with our team effort. If we play together as a team, we win.” Guard Jason Perez said the same: “It was a good game for us. If you play together like we did tonight, good things happen.”
