|Olga Yatskovets and Ukraine grabbed an important win in the battle for ninth place|
Ukraine took a big step towards securing ninth place at the U16 European Championship Women Division B with a 62-60 double-overtime triumph over Luxembourg in Matosihnos, Portugal on Friday.
Luxembourg looked set for victory until they were outscored 17-8 in the fourth quarter and Kristina Karp split a pair of free throws with just four seconds left to level at 45.
The first extra period was a similar story as Luxembourg jumped out to a 54-50 lead before Olga Yatskovets converted on an and-one and Nataliia Bulavytska buried one of two foul shots to send it to overtime two at 54-54.
Luxembourg held a slender 60-59 advantage with 15 ticks to play when Karp's jump shot was followed by an Alina Lakh foul shot to seal a dramatic victory.
Evita Herminjard hit a crucial lay-up in the last 90 seconds to lift Switzerland to a 68-63 success over Romania in the opening game of the competition for 12th position.
The Swiss were in front for the majority of the game but Alina Pop pulled the Romanians back within two at 61-59 in the closing stages.
However Herminjard responded instantly to restore the lead to four and her team held on.
Marie Steiner led all scorers with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting supported by Safie Tolusso who had 14 points and 14 rebounds for Switzerland.
Olivia Dupuy and Sarah Kenny combined for 46 points to lead Ireland past Estonia 77-68 in the fight for 15th spot.
Five of Kenny's 23 points came during a 9-0 run early in the third quarter which opened up a seven-point lead they would not give up.
