Sweden Grab Fifth From Russia
Cleopatra Forsman B. Goga collected 10 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals as Sweden captured a best-ever fifth-place showing at the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women by beating Russia 60-55.
Amanda Zahui Bazoukou had 16 points and 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the U16 event.
Salome Kabengano added eight assists for the Swedes, and Jennifer Kucukkaya scored 16 points - 10 more than her previous high in the tournament.
Alexandra Tarasova led Russia with 18 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals.
The game went back and forth for the first three quarters with 15 lead changes until Russia opened a 51-45 advantage with 7:23 to play.
But Sweden used a 12-0 run over three minutes to pull ahead 57-51 with 4:30 to go. The lead would eventually grow to 60-53.
Earlier in the day, hosts Latvia grabbed seventh place with a dominating 82-54 victory over Hungary with Sabine Niedola leading the way with 28 points, 17 rebounds, five assists, four steals and four blocked shots.
Latvia pulled ahead 24-13 two minutes into the second quarter and Hungary never pulled closer the rest of the way with the hosts building their lead to 31 points late in the contest.
Linda Pagrode scored 14 points and Ilze Gotfrida chipped in 13 for Latvia, who returned to the Division A for the first time since 2001 when they posted their best finish of fifth place.
Krisztina Raksanyi scored 14 points for Hungary, whose eighth-placed showing matches the nation's best result since taking eighth in 1997.
