Serbia Slip Past Czechs, Both Make Semis

02 August 2007
Serbia used a 16-4 fourth quarter run to grab first place in Group E of the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women with a 67-65 victory over fellow semi-finalists Czech Republic.

The Czechs will get a re-match of the 2006 final against three-time reigning champions Spain in the first semi-final on Saturday and Serbia will take on France afterwards.

Maja Vucurovic scored eight points and Sara Krnijc had six points in Serbia's decisive 16-4 spurt, which turned a 58-50 deficit with 6:40 remaining into a 66-62 advantage with 1:52 to play.

Adela Filarova drained a three-pointer with 49 seconds left to make it 66-65. And Jelena Prvulovic made one of two foul shots with 17 seconds left for the Serbs.

But Michaela Pavlasova's three-pointer from the top of the key in the final second banged off the background and off target.

Tijana Ajdukovic scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Serbia while Vucurovic added 15 points and Krnjic was held to just 10 points and nine rebounds.

Serbia's other main low post player Tina Jovanovic did not play for the second straight game due to a back problem - though the Serbs out-rebounded the Czechs 50-34.

The lead went back and forth throughout the first half and the Czechs led the entire third period - by as many as eight points. The lead was eight again in the fourth before Serbia went on their final push.

Lenka Bartakova paced the Czechs with 15 points.
