France Earn Final Showdown With Spain

France will face Spain in the final of the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women after seeing off the challenge of host nation Poland on Saturday.

The French, winners of the tournament in 2001, had a 10-point deficit to make up at half-time, but came back valiantly to secure a 77-68 win and a place in Sunday's final against the defending champions.

France edged the opening quarter 18-14, although Poland had guard Martyna Mickow to thank for keeping them within touching distance as she poured in eight points.

And Mickow's influence soon began to rub off on her team-mates as the home favourites found their rhythm in the second period.

Fifteen successive points without reply helped Poland open up a 33-23 lead at the halfway stage - much to the delight of the 800 spectators.

However, the French ran amok in the third quarter with forward Carine Brossais and guard Melanie Plust heading the charge as the former champions tore apart their opponents' defense to take a 61-40 advantage into the final 10 minutes.

And although Poland rallied in the closing stages, the damage had already been done as France held on for the victory.

Brossais was the star of the show for France top-scoring with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, while Plust also poured in 14 points.

Agnieszka Skobel was the leading player for Poland with 18 points and 10 rebounds in what was a losing cause.
