|Virag Weninger and Hungary advance to the next round as Group D winners|
A fantastic defensive performance helped Hungary to a 56-36 win over France which secured top spot in Group D of the U16 European Championship Women.
The Hungarian team used their size to great effect to restrict France to outside shots. The swarming energy of Hungary held France to just 12 first-half points as they established a strong advantage.
Although Manon Boehrer grabbed a steal in the dying seconds of the first quarter to reduce the Hungarian lead to six, Hungary continued to move the ball well and make nice cuts, Agnes Studer finding Eniko Kuttor under the basket for one particularly pretty play as Hungary moved 24-12 ahead at half-time.
Things did not get any easier for the French team in the second half as Hungary fought ferociously for every loose ball and extended their lead up to 20 by the end of the quarter.
France rallied for one final push, but Hungary kept pushing the ball hard on every miss to ensure the scoreboard kept ticking over in their favour.
Nina Aho led Hungary with 14 points, Kuttor finished with 12 and three players finished with four steals each. Ornella Bankole top-scored for France with 7 points.
