GAME REPORT

Italy Shake Off Turkey To Secure Quarters

Italy booked their place in the quarter-finals of the U16 European Championship for Women, grinding out a 67-49 victory on Tuesday.

The hosts joined Spain and the Turks in qualifying out of Group F.

Emma Penna had 13 of her 22 points in the first half as the Italians eventually built an advantage which grew to as much as 15.

And although Turkey rallied in the fourth quarter, they left it too late. It leaves France, the Netherlands and Hungary to scrap over the one remaining spot in the last eight in Wednesday's concluding round of games.

Turkey led twice in the opening minutes but the Italians pushed 22-15 in front at the end of the first period. The deficit was closed to eight at half-time but the home team stepped up to move 41-26 clear midway through the third.

The Turks - ultimately paced by 17 from Büsra Akbas - hit back to threaten an improbable comeback, embarking on a 20-8 run which took them within six at one stage. But they failed to score in the last four minutes as Italy celebrated.
