| 17.08.2011 U16 WOMEN Greece booked a quarter-final date with Spain at the U16 European Championships for Women, securing a spot in the knock-out stages by beating Slovakia 76-69. Anna Stamolamprou hit 31 points as the Greeks took fourth place in Group F with a 3-2 record to set up what will be a daunting tie. However they were pushed to the finish by Slovakia who looked set to pick up a surprise and possibly qualification securing victory when they led 15-6 late in the first quarter. But a 7-0 run in the second put Greece in front for the first time as they edged 39-38 clear at half-time. The sides were tied at 52-52 late in the third but eventually the Greeks produced what proved to be a decisive surge midway through the fourth, going 73-63 ahead and withstanding a late barrage. Zofia Hruscáková had a game-high 32 points for Slovakia who drop into the play-offs for ninth place. |
