Israel Edge England In Thriller



Israel outlasted England 49-47 in a real basketball battle in the first day of the Qualifying Round at the U16 European Championship Women Division B.

Entering the final quarter down by four points, Israel had the better end versus England in a real low scoring game. Israel just scored 49 points but it was enough to edge England. Four minutes from time they trailed 40-45 but back to back three pointers changed the momentum. In a thrilling final minute May Dayan led Israel to victory.

Meanwhile Germany remained unbeaten with a 79-70 win over Romania. The Slovak Republic had no trouble in defeating Ireland (78-33).

In Group E Hungary made easy work out of Denmark to stay perfect. Behind Amadea Szamosi's 23 points and 14 rebounds they won 66-48.

The other two match-ups in that group had been much closer. Slovenia defeated Portugal 55-52. Slovenia won the hard fought game in the last 30 seconds. It was a key win for them.

Bulgaria stopped Latvia in their tracks. The Bulgarians used a strong second half to overcome their rivals 49-43.

In the Classification Round FYR of Macedonia collected their first victory. The hosts beat Luxembourg 59-49. In the second match-up the Ukraine crushed Switzerland 68-46.
