Today the Division B U16 European Championship Women started in Skopje (FYR of Macedonia). In their respective opening games Hungary and Israel were able to secure victory.
In Group A Hungary routed Switzerland with 84-44.
In a Group D match-up Israel defeated the Ukraine with 68-59. Israel built a strong 24-8 lead in the first quarter, but had to fight off the resilient Ukrainians ever since then.
Mariya Ruban and Miriam Uro-Nile provided a big spark for the Ukraine with both of them collecting a double-double. Israel were able to overcome the rally of their opponents and finally secured their opening win in the last quarter. May Dayan led the winning team with a game high 17 points.
In the other Group D match-up Germany defeated Ireland with 69-21. Ireland struggled offensively while Germany rolled to their first win. In Group A, Portugal beat Bulgaria (61-48) behind a balanced team effort.
In Group B Denmark landed an important win over Slovenia. It took an extra period to decide this duel in which Denmark ended up as the winning team (76-71). In the other game of this group Latvia cruised to a 73-45 win over Luxembourg.
Host FYROM had to suffer a huge loss in their opener. The Macedonian team scored only 33 points, while their opponents from the Slovak Republic had no trouble to light up the scoreboard. With the final score of 100-33 the Slovak squad marked the day's biggest win. In the second match of Group C England started with a 68-57 defeat over Romania.
