Free Throw Woes Hurt Kyiv At Virtus

Virtus Bologna put last week's buzzer-beating home defeat to EWE Baskets Oldenburg behind them and edged BC Kyiv 68-64 in the EuroChallenge Top 16 on Wednesday evening.

Kris Langford scored 19 points for the Italian giants.

Virtus had been just seconds away from claiming their second Group J win last week at home to EWE Baskets but a three-pointer at the death by the German outfit gave them a one-point upset in Bologna.

In that game, Virtus star Reshawn Terry missed a crucial late free throw but he rose to the occasion against the Ukrainian outfit.

With Virtus clinging to a 65-63 lead 10 seconds from the end after a Brindley Wright jump shot, Kyiv fouled Terry.

The former University of North Carolina star made the first free throw but missed the second.

However, he grabbed the offensive rebound and drilled a short jump shot for a 68-63 advantage with just six seconds remaining.

Virtus then bizarrely fouled Scoonie Penn with two seconds remaining while he was attempting a three-pointer.

Penn only made one of the three attempts and Kyiv lost by four.

Missed free throws proved to be the undoing of Kyiv. They were just 10 of 22 (45.4%) at the line while Virtus (14 of 20) made four more.

Each team hit 18 shots inside the arc, and six beyond it.

Terry finished with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds while teammate Earl Boykins scored 15 and had six assists.

Wright and Kenan Bajramovic had 13 points apiece for Kyiv.
