BC Kyiv Release Six Players

19 February 2009
BC Kyiv's bid to win the EuroChallenge is looking feeble following the club's decision to let go of six key players in the wake of their Cup of Ukraine defeat to Azovmash.

Kyiv are in first place in Top 16 Group J at 2-1 - the same record as Virtus Bologna - but going into next week's home game against EWE Baskets Oldenburg, the Ukrainians will no longer have imports Scoonie Penn, Brindley Wright, Kenan Bajramovic, Jovo Stanojevic, Goran Jeretin and Clay Tucker.

The only import that is still on the books is Manuchar Markoishvili.

The club, which reduced its payroll considerably with the moves, said in an official statement: "The team failed to qualify to the EuroCup round robin and failed to win the Cup of Ukraine."

Kyiv, who are coached by Sasa Obradovic, almost beat Azovmash in Sunday's Cup of Ukraine final but Rolandas Jarutis nailed a game-winning three-pointer with three seconds to go for the Mariupol outfit.
