18 March 2007

The third meeting of the FIBA Europe Board for the 2006-2010 term of office was held today in Chieti, Italy.

Two important deadlines were established for the choice of future EuroBasket Women host countries.

The Board will decide in May 2007 at their next meeting to be held in Warsaw, Poland the host country for EuroBasket Women 2009. The Czech Republic and Latvia are the two bidding countries.

In November, the Board will select either Poland or Spain as the host country for EuroBasket Women 2011.

All Commission reports were presented and approved and a number of important conclusions were reached.

The locations for the next two Board meetings were chosen with Prague to host the gathering from 9-11 November 2007 and Bucharest in March 2008.

It was announced during the Board meeting that John Goncalves of Gibraltar will be recognised with the MBE Award for achievement in sport. As a result, the Queen of England will be honouring him at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace this upcoming June.

“We were certainly able to work in a positive way and I am quite pleased with the conclusions reached here in Chieti,” summarised FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos.
