Want to get an idea of how popular basketball is in the Philippines? Just ask the Chairman of the Philippines Referee Commission Perry Martinez.
"When our Secretary General goes around the country talking about basketball he always says the same thing," says Martinez, who was also the former head of the Technical Department at the Philippine Basketball Association.
"You will find three things in every town in the Philippines: A statue of our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, town hall, and a basketball court."
Martinez was in Gran Canaria this week to observe the FIBA Europe Potential Referee and National Instructor Meeting. Besides some good weather Martinez is taking a wealth of knowledge home with him.
"This is an experience that is quite priceless." Says Martinez
"There are some things that we have already been doing, but I've learned in my time here that there are a lot of things that we are not putting enough emphasis on."
Martinez says there are three main things he will take back home with him.
"One thing that really strikes me here is the emphasis on basketball knowledge. We are week on this, general basketball knowledge is really important."
"Second is the amazing technology they have at their disposal here that we don't have in Asia, and third is the intellectual discussions here are at such a high level."
"This lively discussion is very healthy and it's something we don't have enough of in the Philippines."
