EuroBasket 2011 Additional Qualifying Draw Complete

Friday was a busy day at the FIBA Europe headquarters in Munich where the draws for the Additional Qualifying Tournament for both EuroBasket and EuroBasket Women 2011 took place.

Finland, Hungary and Portugal, who participate in the Men's tournament, were drawn in one group where they will play each other in home and away games, August 9-24, 2011.

The members of the Association of European Team Sports (ETS) had a full agenda when they met for one of their regular sessions in Brussels, Belgium, on Tuesday 5th October.

The discussion focused on papers related to the article 165 of the Lisbon Treaty, which stresses the significance of sport in Europe, recognises its specific nature and defines the promotion of sport as a European Community objective.

Eurobasket Women 2011 Draw on 11 December

FIBA Europe announced on Thursday that the draw for the Eurobasket Women 2011 will take place on Saturday 11 December 2010 in the Polish city of Lodz.

The President of the Polish Basketball Federation Roman Ludwiczuk invited delegations from the national federations whose teams have qualified for the Eurobasket Women 2011 to the draw proceedings at the city's Andels Hotel.

System Of Competition Changed For Eurobasket Women 2013

FIBA Europe announced on Monday that, at a meeting in Istanbul the FIBA Europe Executive Committee, together with a majority of the FIBA Europe board members, decided to amend the system of competition for EuroBasket Women.

The EuroBasket Women Final Round will still be played with 16 teams in the future but the system of Qualification with Division A and B has been abolished.

Seven More Teams Get Direct EuroBasket Berth

Following the announcement that the EuroBasket 2011 will be played with 24 teams, FIBA Europe has determined the directly qualified teams as well as the system of additional qualification for next year's tournament.

In addition to the five teams that had already qualified to a 16-team EuroBasket, seven more teams already assured their ticket for Lithuania.

EuroBasket 2011 To Be Played With 24 Teams

FIBA Europe announces that the FIBA Europe Executive Committee approved the proposal made by the Lithuanian Basketball Federation to play the EuroBasket 2011 Final Round with 24, instead of 16 teams.

The Executive Committee was backed in its decision by a majority of the FIBA Europe Board Members, who were also present at the meeting in Istanbul.

Five Teams Book Ticket To EuroBasket 2011

With the Qualifying Round for EuroBasket 2011 complete, Montenegro, Great Britain and Belgium have secured spots in the Final Round in Lithuania as the winners of their groups.

F.Y.R. of Macedonia and Israel also advanced to the Final Round of the event as the two best second place teams. The three teams placed second in their groups were ranked according to win/loss percentage and goal coefficient with the top two advancing to the final round of EuroBasket 2011.

Eight Teams Qualify For EuroBasket Women 2011

Croatia, Israel, Latvia and the Slovak Republic added their names on Saturday to the list of eight teams that will be making the trip to the EuroBasket Women 2011 Final Round in Poland.

Great Britain, Lithuania, Montenegro and Turkey had already secured qualification before the last group games of the Qualifying Round were played August 29.

FIBA Europe And ULEB Delegation Meet In Munich
FIBA Europe President Mr. Olafur Rafnsson and FIBA Europe Secretary General Mr. Nar Zanolin met Tuesday a delegation from ULEB (Union of European Leagues of Basketball), headed by President Eduardo Portela, at the FIBA Europe headquarters in Munich, Germany.

This meeting comes after Mr. Rafnsson´s election last June and the will on both sides to work jointly. The Leagues have expressed their points of view on the current situation of European basketball and have offered ideas to keep developing it.

EuroBasket 2011 Finals To Be Held In Kaunas

At a press conference held prior to the Bronze Medal Game of the OMNITEL U18 European Championship in Vilnius, Lithuania, representatives of FIBA Europe, the Lithuanian Government and the Lithuanian Basketball Federation invited media representatives to get an update on the preparations of EuroBasket 2011 in the six hosting cities.

For FIBA Europe, President Olafur Rafnsson and Secretary General Nar Zanolin were present to comment about the most recent visits to the different cities.

Rubio Receives Young Men's Player of the Year Trophy

FIBA Europe has launched the official website of the Omnitel U18 European Championship 2010 in Vilnius, Lithuania in a new layout.

The website comes in a completely new design and is the first in a series of associated websites to be launched with the new look.

FIBA Europe and the sportsman sign TV rights deal for Youth Championships

FIBA Europe have reached an agreement with the sportsman media group for the distribution of TV rights for the 2010 U20 and U18 European Championships for Men, organised in Croatia and Lithuania respectively.

The Munich-based media rights agency have a wealth of experience in handling rights of major sports events, including the German football Bundesliga and the Volleyball and Handball Champions League.

Eurocup and EuroChallenge Qualifying Round and Regular Season Drawn

At the joint draw for FIBA Europe and Euroleague Basketball, held in Barcelona, the match-ups for Eurocup and EuroChallenge Qualifying Rounds, plus the Regular Season of EuroChallenge were determined.

The 16 teams playing for the last eight spots in the next edition of Eurocup went first. The eight teams falling short in the home and away games will go on to play in the EuroChallenge Regular Season.

European Cup Season Kicks Off With Barcelona Draw

The first event of next year's European Cup season for men, the draws of the 2010-11 Euroleague, Eurocup and EuroChallenge, will be held in Barcelona, Spain on Thursday, July 8th.

EuroLeague Women 2011 Participants Announced

FIBA Europe has announced the list of participating teams for the EuroLeague Women season 2010/11.

According to the regulations, defending champions Spartak Moscow Region Vidnoje receive an automatic entry while 21 places and two wild cards are allocated on the basis of the ranking of the federations and of the clubs in the last three (3) seasons of European Cup Competitions.

Wisla, Mondeville Given EuroLeague Women Wild Card Entry

FIBA Europe announced today that the clubs of Wisla Can-Pack Krakow (Poland) and USO Mondeville (France) have been allocated the two Wild Cards available for the 2010/2011 EuroLeague Women season.

The decision was taken on the basis of the ranking of the clubs from the previous three (3) seasons.

EuroBasket Women 2011 Host Cities Announced

The organizers of EuroBasket Women 2011 in Poland have made official the three cities that will host the event, scheduled to run from 18 June to 3 July 2011.

Bydgoszcz and Katowice will host Preliminary and Qualifying Round games while the Final Round will be contested in Łódz.

Dates Announced For EuroBasket 2011

EuroBasket 2011 is still more than a year away but for many in Lithuania and across Europe the official countdown can start now as the organizers of the event released the official dates of the competition on Monday.

The tournament will run from 3-18 September.

FIBA Europe Board Expands EuroBasket Field

Basketball in Europe continued its upward growth on Sunday as the Board of FIBA Europe decided to expand the number of participating teams for EuroBasket 2013 from 16 to 24.  The change means the elimination of the Division A and B concept.

EuroBasket Women will continue with a 16 team field.

The newly-elected Board of FIBA Europe on Sunday chose their Vice Presidents, Representatives to the Central Board of FIBA and Executive Committee members.

Board members Ingo Weiss of Germany, Cyriel Coomans of Belgium and John Goncalves of Gibraltar were all named Vice-Presidents of FIBA Europe.

Following the decision of the Board of FIBA Europe to open the bidding process for EuroBasket and EuroBasket Women 2013, ten National Federations have expressed a written interest in staging the events.

FIBA Europe Mourns Passing Of Lejade

It is with great sadness that FIBA Europe and the basketball community have learned of the passing of FIBA Europe Honorary Member Bernard Lejade of France at the age of 85.

Lejade had a basketball career spanning decades, including roles in nearly every aspect of the game, from referee and coach to FIBA Commissioner.

Rafnsson Elected FIBA Europe President

Representatives of FIBA Europe's 51 member federations, attending the 2010 General Assembly in Munich on Saturday, elected Mr. Olafur Rafnsson of Iceland as their new President.

Rafnsson defeated Turgay Demirel of Turkey, the only other candidate, by garnering 32 of 51 votes.

FIBA Europe Nominate Mainini For FIBA Presidency

At the FIBA Europe General Assembly on Saturday in Munich, Germany representatives of the 51 member federations chose Yvan Mainini of France as their nominee to become the next President of FIBA.

According to the principle of rotation current FIBA President Bob Elphinston of Australia, whose term expires this year, must be replaced by a representative from Europe.
