France Beat Russia To Advance

Esther Moisan Niamke led all French players with 16 points

France took control of Group C and became the first team to qualify for the Second Round of the U20 European Championship Women, by defeating Russia 66-51 on Friday in Samsun.

With a help of a 9-2 spurt before halftime, France opened up a 10-point advantage. Midway through the third quarter, led by center Christelle Diallo and forward Marie Mbuyamba, they went in front 48-31 and traced their path to a big victory.

It was defence that made the difference in this game, as France forced 19 turnovers and used its 10 steals to score 12 fastbreak points compared to only two easy baskets for Russia.

Esther Moisan Niamke led all French players with 16 points, while Sara Chevaugeon and Diallo had 10 apiece. Galina Kiseleva had nine points for Russia.
