|Francesca Dotto, seen here playing France earlier in the week, hit the game-winning basket against Russia|
Francesca Dotto scored a game-winning basket with four seconds to go for Italy to edge Russia 47-46 in Group C at the U20 European Championship Women on Saturday.
The Italians carry the win into the Second Round, while Russia carry no wins across to Group F where they will face Sweden, Germany and host nation Turkey.
In a low-scoring affair, Russia grabbed a double-digit lead with a 16-2 run that ended the first quarter, but Italy slowly melted the deficit, and early in the third quarter went ahead 27-25 on a three-pointer from Elisa Penna. The two teams remained close until the final minute, when Francesca Dotto made the game-winning layup.
Russia had time to make one more play, but in the face of some intense defence turned the ball over in front of the Italian bench who then rushed the court in ecstasy.
Italy overcame the rebounding deficit (25-38) by making 16 steals and forcing 32 Russian turnovers.
Francesca Dotto scored nine of her game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter, while also tallying five assists and five steals, while Penna scored 12.
Center Ksenia Tikhonenko led Russia with 12 points and 16 rebounds.
