|Dita Rozenberga was the top scorer for Latvia with 21 points and five rebounds|
Italy and Latvia took the first steps towards saving their Division A status with respective Relegation Round wins against Portugal and Great Britain at the U20 European Championship Women.
Both winning teams can justifiably feel aggrieved and frustrated to even be playing for their top flight lives at all, but that was the reality they faced on game-day four in Debrecen.
With three of the four teams guaranteed to make the drop, the Relegation Round promises to be every bit as intense as the fight for the podium with every single point potentially priceless in a round robin format where each team plays each other twice.
This is why some consolation for Portugal will be that despite being beaten 57-48, they didn't get blown away which had looked a real danger when they were 30-15 behind at the break.
But, they fought back well and whilst only briefly flirting with the prospect of winning, they remained competitive until the last second with Daniela Domingues contributing a game high 17 points.
Virginia Galbiati finished with 14 points for Italy who was relieved to simply get their first success on the board.
Latvia allowed a super opportunity to reach the Second Round to slip away after allowing their fate to be taken out of their hands but they made no mistake against Great Britain, tipping off their Relgation Round campaign by powering their way to a commanding 77-56 win.
Dita Rozenberga led the way with 21 points while on this poor form, Great Britain will have to improve beyond recognition to have any chance of avoiding Division B basketball next summer.
