|Maryia Papova was integral for Belarus, scoring 17 points alongside 10 rebounds|
In a tense finish in Group A on Thursday, Belarus edged Ukraine 65-58 to start off the U20 European Championship Women in Samsun with a win.
Belarus took the lead for good late in the first quarter, and pulled away with a 9-2 run at the end of the second quarter.
Maryia Papova put Belarus up 37-24 at the start of the third, but the Ukrainians fought back through Miriam Uro-Nile who got them within three (60-57) in the final minute. However, Papova's free throws sealed the win for the Belarusian side.
Papova, who has just joined the team after winning fifth place with the senior team at EuroBasket Women, finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Ksenija Voishal added 13, and Hanna Kalenta had 11 points in victory, while for Ukraine Uro-Nile finished with 14 points and Lyudmyla Naumenko had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
