Spain Rout Poland For First Win

Spain shrugged off their painful overtime loss to France to rack up a first success, as some stunning perimeter shooting helped to demolish Poland, 90-51, on the second day of the U18 European Championship Women in Bucharest.

Last years' finalists gave an outside shooting master-class as they sunk thirteen triples to put a weakened Poland to the sword with Marta Montoliu leading the way by converting a flawless four of four from long range.

Poland had also lost on their debut in Group A when they could and probably should have beaten Sweden and their task in surprising one of the tournament favourites grew larger when the hugely important Dominika Owczarzak had to sit on the bench nursing an injury.

The Spanish team was rampant right from the tip-off, storming into an early 27-13 lead.

They then rounded off a one-sided first-half with a triple by Montoliu to take a commanding 51-21 advantage into the locker room.

Poland needed to come out fighting hard, if only to be able to at least gain confidence for their third Group game against France and they did that with a much improved third quarter on offence, racking up almost as many points as they had during the opening half.

However, Spain then tightened things up to finish the game very much as they had started it as Ana Faussurier led a surge with a flurry of points in the closing minutes.
