Zofia Hruscáková registered a double-double in points and rebounds in a great opening day game for the Slovak Republic
The Slovak Republic can enjoy the bragging rights over their neighbours after a blistering 20-0 run either side of half-time paved the way for a 70-59 Group C win against the Czech Republic on day one of the U18 European Championship Women.
Leading 32-24 with just three minutes of the first half remaining, the Czechs inexplicably imploded in spectacular fashion and their opponents did a fine job of punishing them.
Not only did they lock down the Czech Republic to ensure they scored the last 12 points of the half without reply, they also didn't allow the interval to disrupt their rhythm, coming out with eight unanswered points to build up a double-digit lead.
Zsofia Hruscakova and Barbora Balintova were the main thrusts of the good work but it wasn't enough to deliver a knock-out blow to the Czechs, who came storming back as the Slovak Republic suddenly found themselves on the ropes.
An 11-2 run at the start of the final period brought the Czechs back to within a point, but just when it looked like they might dodge a bullet after their mid-game drought, the Slovak Republic regained their composure to finish strongly and secure the win.
Hruscakova finished with an excellent double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds while Balintova just missed out on the same feat by one rebound.
