|Laura Ferreira picked up 22 points for Portugal|
A thrilling 69-63 overtime success against the Slovak Republic handed newcomers Portugal a third consecutive success at the U18 European Championship Women in Vukovar, confirming them as Group G winners.
It had looked as if Portugal might have missed the boat when they failed to capitalise on their position of strength and get the job done in regulation time.
But instead of paying the price and regretting a missed opportunity, they took their second chance and resigned Slovak Republic to taking third place in the Group, a spot behind England.
Once again Slovakia struggled to get to the hoop and barely found themselves on the free-throw line to earn points the easy way.
That was in stark contrast to Portugal, who were more aggressive and benefitted from attacking the basket more regularly.
It was a game of consistent lead changes with neither nation having enough in the tank to race clear and perhaps inevitably, it meant overtime was required to separate the teams.
Leading by five points inside the last minute of normal time, Portugal did look to have it wrapped up, but a three-pointer by Terezia Palenikova and a lay-up by Lucia Ondrejkova led to the extra period being needed.
Portugal held firm in the additional five minutes and limited Slovakia to just two baskets to claim a precious third win on the bounce.
Laura Ferreira amassed 22 points for the winning team and Eva Filickova had a monstrous 18 points and 12 rebounds for the disappointed Slovakians.
