Home Joy As Croatia Crush England

Klaudia Perisa (Croatia)
Klaudia Perisa gave Croatia the momentum they never relinquished

There were celebrations in Vinkovci as host nation Croatia chalked up their first success at the U18 European Championship Women with a comprehensive 68-47 Group B win against England.

The result never looked to be in doubt once Croatia raced out of the blocks and sprinted into a 16-3 lead, an advantage they subsequently extended to 21-7 at the end of the first quarter after Klaudia Perisa drained a basket from long-range.

Things then went from bad to worse for England as Croatia continued to dominate, a nice jump-shot by Inja Butina taking the home side 20 points clear before the midway point of the game.

England needed a lift, but couldn't execute on the fast break with the ruthlessness needed to punish far too many Croatian turnovers.

They continually pushed to try and climb the mountain but any time they threatened to reduce the gap to single figures, Croatia found the plays required to maintain their superiority.

Consequently it was a relatively comfortable task for Croatia to see out the win, especially behind the three-point shooting of Perisa who converted four times from downtown en-route to 16 points and completed an excellent display by pulling down ten rebounds for good measure.

Shequila Joseph recorded 20 points for England.
