GAME REPORT

Russia Deliver The Goods Against Germany

11. Stanislav Ilnitskiy (Russia)
Stanislav Ilnitskiy finished with a game-high 20 points

Russia have snapped a three-game losing streak at the U20 European Championship with a 70-58 win over Germany on the second day of action in the Classification Games for 13th to 20th Place.

Turning Point: The two opponents were entangled in a too-close-for-comfort pattern until late in the third quarter, when Russia suddenly decided it was time to give themselves some breathing space. Alexander Gankevich scored his only four points in the game in quick succession and sparked a storming 15-0 Russian run bridging the third and fourth quarters. By the time Germany stopped the rot midway through the final period Russia were leading 57-40.

Game Hero: Once Stanislav Ilnitskiy got the hot hand from downtown, life became easier for Russia. The forward went 5-for-7 from beyond the three-point arc and led all scorers with 20 points, also adding four rebounds and three assists.

Stats Don't Lie: Although both teams committed the same number of turnovers, 17, Russia were the clear beneficiaries as they scored 18 points off German mistakes while Germany only scored seven points following a Russian turnover.

The Bottom Line: This was Russia's first win in Group H and not only gives them hope of clinching a top-two finish, but also means that the Czech Republic will live to fight another day. Apart from Germany, Hungary were also penalised by this result as, despite their current 2-0 advantage, will have to wait until Wednesday to secure their position.
