Russia is the centre of attention of the European basketball community this week.

The 2011 Euroleague Women champions will be crowned on Sunday in Europe's eastern outpost, the city of Ekaterinburg, while a forward-looking European project that extends far beyond this year already made some of its first steps in the capital of the Russian Federation.

FIBA Europe Head of Operations Miguel Betancor was in Moscow on Wednesday to present project FIBA Europe UNIVERSITAS at the Russian State University of Physical Education.

Mr Betancor discussed with Natalia Maksakovskaya, Head of the International Department, forms of collaboration between FIBA Europe and the Moscow Sports University on the UNIVERSITAS project.

The objective of the project is to promote basketball as an educational tool beyond basketball courts, by creating educational programs that reach students in universities and all other academic levels alike.

The main event of the day was a multimedia presentation of UNIVERSITAS to all basketball students at the Moscow University.

The enthusiastic young crowd expressed huge interest in the details of the project, presented to them by university lecturer Lidya Vasilievna.

"For us, the project represents a jump in quality in the development of basketball within the academic field. FIBA Europe contributes its sport expertise to the education process for the benefit of all students," Mr Betancor told the audience.

Sergey Formin of the Russian Basketball Federation, which collaborated in organising the event, was in attendance.

Mr Betancor also presented the FIBA Europe Techno Centre, with the aim of utilising it as a means of collaboration in future projects in the field of technology in sport.
