FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin concluded a three-day visit in Italy, host country of EuroBasket Women 2007.
During the visit, Zanolin met with Mario Di Marco, President of the EuroBasket Women 2007 Local Organising Committee, Maurizio Bertea, Secretary General of the Italian Basketball Federation, and other officials involved in the organisation of the event.
“Our meetings were very positive,” Zanolin said. “There seems to be general understanding between all parties involved and I am confident that EuroBasket Women 2007 will be a tremendous success.”
Zanolin toured the arenas and facilities that will be used in Chieti, Ortona and Vasto, all of which are located in the Abruzzo Region of Italy along the Adriatic Sea. He approved of the accommodations that will be used by both players and officials in all cities.
Chieti will host one of the preliminary rounds as well the semi-finals and finals. Ortona and Vasto as well as Lanciano will also be hosting preliminary round play.
“I am happy to report that the renovations on all of the basketball arenas are progressing as planned,” said Zanolin. “All of the other work preparations are on schedule.”
2007 will mark the seventh time that EuroBasket Women will be held in Italy. The first occasion was the inaugural EuroBasket Women held in 1938 and most recent time was in 1993.
EuroBasket Women 2007 will be special not only for the competition on the floor but also because it will mark the culmination of the Year of Women’s Basketball, a prestigious initiative by FIBA Europe and its member federations to bring focus to women’s basketball in order to improve recognition and respect for the sport in Europe and all female participants in basketball.
“We are hopeful that as a result of our efforts through the Year of Women’s Basketball, there will be great visibility of EuroBasket Women 2007,” said Year of Women’s Basketball Project Manager Esther Wender. “We expect significantly higher female participation to continue in the future.”
“Due to the importance of the project as it relates to EuroBasket Women 2007, it is encouraging to know that everything is on target in regards to the organisation of the event.”
The Year of Women’ Basketball will be officially launched at the EuroLeague Women’s All-Star game on March 8, 2006 in Pecs, Hungary.
