FIBA Europe Executive Committee Approve Seeding For 2007 EuroBasket Men & Women Qualifying Round Draw

The FIBA Europe Executive Committee, the European members of the FIBA Central Board and the Competitions Commission met on Friday in Munich, Germany.

One of the topics on the agenda was the upcoming draws for the qualifying round of EuroBasket Men and EuroBasket Women which will take place on 11th February in Madrid, Spain.

EuroBasket Men Division A

Greece, Germany, France, Spain, Lithuania, Slovenia, Serbia & Montenegro, Italy and Turkey will all play in the 2006 FIBA World Championship and are therefore directly qualified for EuroBasket 2007, which will be held in Spain.

The Executive Committee decided to re-admit Poland to Division A for EuroBasket 2007, bringing the total remaining number of teams to 16.

"Although Poland were relegated to Division B in 2005, it was proposed that their senior men's team be moved back to Division A," explained FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin after the meeting.

"The proposal was based on the fact that since Poland will host EuroBasket 2009, they will qualify automatically. Unfortunately, this means that they will have no competitive games in 2008 and 2009 which could potentially hinder their long term development plans and performance at EuroBasket 2009.

It is in the best interests of basketball that the home team is as strong as possible at any EuroBasket and as such the Executive Committee felt it would be beneficial if Poland could play in Division A in 2007, thus providing them with top quality preparation games."

The 16 teams will be divided into four groups of four teams. The seeding is as follows:

Seed 1 Croatia Russia Israel Bulgaria
Seed 2 Latvia Bosnia & Herzegovina Ukraine
