The 2006 FIBA Europe General Assembly closed on Sunday in Munich, Germany with a special tribute to two of European basketball's elderly statesmen.

FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos presented Ernesto Segura de Luna (ESP) and Alexander Boshkov (BUL) with FIBA Europe honorary member status and a plaque to recognise their efforts.

"It touches my heart to get this honour," Segura de Luna said to delegates.

Segura de Luna, currently 84 years of age, served as Spanish Basketball Federation President from 1972-1984 and then again from 1992-2004.

"I may be old, but I still keep coming," he joked.

"And I will continue to keep coming as long as I possibly can because FIBA is my life."

He never played, officiated or coached, yet his impact on basketball in Europe has been immense in his 50-year involvement with the sport, most notably in the develepment of basketball in Spain.

"You are my friends forever and I will always remember you," he concluded in his address.

Boshkov, a former referee and manager, previously served as President and Secretary General of the Bulgarian Basketball Federation and as a FIBA Central Board Member.

He was President of the FIBA Europe Women's Commission in the term that has just expired and which introduced the Year of Women's Basketball project.

Boshkov was responsible for international affairs with the Bulgarian Ministry of Sport.

"It's a big honour to get this award, which is an individual award," Boshkov said in his address after receiving a warm round of applause from delegates.

"But this award is not an individual award because I am part of the FIBA family.

"This award will help me to remember and not let go of something that has been so important to me.

"I had the chance to make my dreams come true because of the support and help of all national federations.

"So I want to thank you because I received this with your collaboration."
